Tweeters Teed Off by Golf Channel's MLK Promotion

TV's Golf Channel is under fire for using the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's famous "I Have a Dream Speech" in a bizarre promotion on its Twitter page.

"Tweet your 'golf' dream on the 50th anniversary of MLK's 'I have a dream speech' using: … "I have a dream that _____" the NBC-owned station asked golf fans on Twitter.

The post was yanked a short time later, but not before outraged tweeters let loose with a torrent of angry comments.

Among them:
  • "Golf Channel. Stop worrying about the back swing, start worrying about the backlash."
  • "Weird that a golf institution would be tone deaf about race."
  • "I had a dream that golf wasn't a racist sport."
  • "I have a dream that I didn't read this tweet."
The Golf Channel — which reaches 82 million cable subscribers and is headquartered in Orlando, Fla. — later apologized in another tweet. "Our earlier tweet was inappropriate," it said. "The intent was to celebrate this important date in history & we regret we failed to meet that standard."
