Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said Thursday the judiciary branch is important to the nation's democratic process.

"Judges do depend on the bar to explain the importance of an independent judiciary. It is our nation's hallmark and pride," she said at an event at the Adas Israel synagogue in Washington, Politico reported.

"The judiciary is a reactive branch of government. It doesn't generate the controversies that come before it — it's reactive to what's out there," Ginsburg added.

Ginsburg said she is still hoping that an Equal Rights Amendment will be added to the Constitution.

"A very large part of becoming a more perfect union is to embrace more and more people. I think the genius of the Constitution is that this concept of 'We the People' has become ever more embracing," Ginsburg said at the event, Politico reported.

On Tuesday, Ginsburg also commented on politics in Washington, saying, "I think it will take great leaders on both sides of the aisle to say, 'Let's stop this nonsense and start working for our country the way we should.'"
