The majority of voters in Georgia believe in creationism over evolution, according to a new Public Policy Polling (PPP) poll.

Entitled "Georgia Miscellany," the survey of 520 voters by the Democratic-affiliated PPP found that 53 percent of respondents believe more in creationism than evolution, compared to 29 percent who believe more in evolution and 18 percent who were not sure.

Breaking down the responses along party lines, the survey conducted Aug. 2-5 also found that Georgia Republicans overwhelmingly believe in creationism, with 70 percent choosing it over evolution, while 17 percent believe in evolution and 13 percent are not sure.

Georgia Democrats are more evenly split, with 43 percent saying they believe in creationism, 33 percent in evolution, and 24 percent not sure about how they feel.

Independents had a narrower split, with 46 percent believing in creationism, 40 percent in evolution. Fourteen percent said they just weren't sure.

A June 2012 Gallup poll also found an overall rise in the number of Americans believing in creationism. Among a sample of 1,012 adults, 46 percent said they were believers, an increase of two percent over the past three decades, the Huffington Post reported.
