The University of Georgia staff and graduate students held a silent "die-in" demonstration to protest plans for the campus reopening while the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

AJC.com reported more than 50 grad students, faculty and others participated Thursday, laying on the grass for an hour — with face coverings — in front of the university’s administration building.

Demonstrators also held up signs — one stating: “R.I.P. Campus Safety” and “I Can’t Teach When I’m Dead.” They then handed over a petition with 1,002 signatures outlining their demands, which included more COVID-19 testing and allowing any faculty members to teach remotely if they choose to.

Sujata Iyengar, who has been teaching literature at the university since 1998, told the news outlet she participated over concerns administrators “have not thought this through,” AJC reported.

In a statement, the university said “[W]e have affirmatively addressed the core of these concerns through our comprehensive planning over the summer” and noted it has committed $250,000 to two emergency funds benefiting students who are experiencing critical and unexpected financial difficulties, the news outlet reported.

UGA’s fall semester begins Aug. 20, though some university schools begin classes Monday, AJC reported.

“The universities seem to be adamant people need to be on campus,” grad student Bryant Barnes told AJC.
