George H.W. Bush apologized Wednesday after an actress claimed he touched her inappropriately four years ago when she met the 93-year-old, wheelchair-bound former U.S. president, the Daily Mail reported.

Bush's office issued the apology after the London newspaper asked for a response to the accusation from actress Heather Lind, who starred in the AMC television series, "Turn: Washington's Spies." Bush did not address Lind's charge that he touched her "from behind," but he said he was sorry he offended her for what Lind called a "dirty joke."

"President Bush would never — under any circumstance — intentionally cause anyone distress, and he most sincerely apologizes if his attempt at humor offended Ms. Lind," Bush's office said.

Lind, in a lengthy Instagram post, said. "'When I got the chance to meet George H. W. Bush four years ago to promote a historical television show I was working on, he sexually assaulted me while I was posing for a similar photo. He didn't shake my hand. He touched me from behind from his wheelchair with his wife Barbara Bush by his side. He told me a dirty joke."

Lind's charge is the latest of dozens of accusations of sexual misconduct from actresses and models against Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and other prominent men
