San Francisco has canceled its famed Pride parade this summer, though the event would have celebrated its 50th anniversary, organizers announced this week.

The Guardian reported that for the first time since the storied and colorful event began, there will be no march along the city’s Market Street, no rainbow-clad revelers, and no accompanying outdoor concerts or drag shows.

The events had been scheduled for June 27-28.

“This was not a decision we arrived at lightly – we are sincerely heartbroken”, Fred Lopez, the executive director, told the Guardian. “But what it came down to is that the well-being of our community is always going to be our top priority.”

According to the Guardian report, San Francisco’s Pride parade is one of the largest in the world, and this year at least 1 million people were expected to mark the half-century milestone.

Another large Pride event, in New York City, has offered no formal announcement on its pandemic plan.

San Francisco Pride is expected to join Pride organizations worldwide in a “Virtual Global Pride” event on June 27, the Guardian said.
