By    |   Tuesday, 25 January 2011 12:06 PM EST

Conservative Republicans in the House will work to enact a ban on gay marriage in Washington, D.C. Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan, chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC), tells The Hill that he will press for a vote on the controversial issue during this Congress.

“I think RSC will push for it, and I’m certainly strongly for it,” he says. “I don’t know if we’ve made a decision if I’ll do it or let another member do it, but I’m 100 percent for it.” The RSC has 175 members.

Jordan was the lead sponsor on the D.C. Defense of Marriage Act in the 111th Congress. The bill was introduced after the D.C. City Council and then-Mayor Adrian Fenty signaled they would recognize same-sex marriages. Jordan’s bill attracted 53 co-sponsors last year. But it is expected to garner more support in the GOP-led House this year.
