Fundraising Falls for Obamacare Enrollment Nonprofit

By    |   Wednesday, 12 Nov 2014 04:21 PM

Fundraising is down nearly 26 percent for the nonprofit group, Enroll America, which assists consumers who wish to join the Obamacare exchanges, The Hill reports.

The group raised about $27 million when it first began its enrollment program. This year, it's raised about $20 million for outreach efforts geared at adding people onto insurance rolls.

The group's president, Anne Filipic, pushed back on any concern over the dip, noting a rise in its nonprofit partnerships, which have doubled, as the program moves into its second year, The Hill reported.

"We are operating on a strong foundation," Filipic told The Hill. "We're not expecting this to be a walk in the park, but we do expect … that we are well-positioned to make the most of every day."

News of the drop-off came two days after the federal government revised its 2015 estimate for enrollments. The Department of Health and Human Services said it expects 9 million to 9.9 million Americans to sign up for the Obamacare marketplaces over the next year, CBS News reported.

About 7.1 million are currently enrolled in the private insurance programs, and the government has targeted a figure of 9.1 million during the next enrollment period, providing those currently in the system decide to return, CBS noted.

HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell said her agency has worked to make online enrollment easier, faster, and more secure, according to CBS. But she acknowledged it would be a harder sell to get new consumers into the marketplace as the enrollment period for 2015 runs for just three months, rather than the six-month window allowed for its kickoff year.

The government's revised enrollment forecast was cut 30 percent, CNBC reported, noting that the Congressional Budget Office had initially projected 13 million people enrolled in the Obamacare exchanges by the end of 2015.
