Sen. Flake Stung By Scorpion

By    |   Thursday, 15 August 2013 02:52 PM EDT

Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, who knows the dangers of desert life, experienced them firsthand Wednesday after being stung by a scorpion while spending the August recess back home.

"The perils of living in the desert. This guy stung me today #scorpion." Flake tweeted early Thursday morning, posting a picture of the offending arachnid.

A spokesman for Flake's office said the sting was "no big deal," but that the senator's left arm is still a bit numb after what he termed a routine desert experience, Politico reports.

The Republican Senate rookie is no stranger to the hazards of the natural world: He spent his Memorial Day recess on a survivalist trip to a deserted North Pacific island with his two youngest sons, 15-year-old Tanner and 13-year-old Dallin. He had promised the boys the trip when he launched his Senate bid nearly two years ago, and took them to the unoccupied island of Biggarenn, which is part of the Marshall Islands where the three had to fend for their own food and water in escapades that included spearfishing.
