State officials who supervised the presidential election last month, have found few credible allegations of fraudulent voting, The New York Times reports.

Despite the allegations of rampant voter fraud and claims millions had voted illegally, election and law enforcement officials in 26 states, and the District of Columbia, say they don't know of any credible claims, according to The Times.

The newspaper noted election supervisors in eight other state knew of only one allegation.

But a few other states did report slightly larger numbers of fraud claims that are being looked into. Out of 4.3 million primary and general election votes, Tennessee tallied 40 credible allegations, The Times reports.

Georgia opened 25 inquiries into "suspicious voting or election related activity." The state recorded more than 4.1 million ballots cast.

The Times reports it made inquiries to all 50 states and all but Kansas responded. The newspaper stressed it found no indication of widespread fraud.

The findings debunk statements by President-elect Donald Trump that millions of illegal voters supported Democrat Hillary Clinton, the newspaper points out.

"Mr. Trump falsely asserted on Twitter that he would have won the popular vote — Mrs. Clinton received some 2.8 million more votes — if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally," the newspaper reported.

The Washington Post notes there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud leading up to the election or after it. The newspaper reported there's no evidence of even modest voter fraud.
