FBI Still a 'White Male' Bastion, Records Show

By    |   Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 06:26 AM

Sobering FBI statistics not only verify FBI Director James Comey's admission the agency is "overwhelmingly white and male," they show the ranks of black and Hispanic special agents on a long slide.

The agency's diversity statistics show blacks made up only 4.5 percent of special agents at the end of 2014, down from 4.74 percent in early 2012 and 5.6 percent in 1997, Politico notes.

Hispanic agents made up 6.81 percent by last December, the statistics show — down from 7.14 percent in 2012 and 6.9 percent in 1997.

"It’s discouraging to think they haven’t greatly improved," Temple University law professor and civil rights attorney David Kairys tells Politico.

"They clearly had a problem from their origins going back to J. Edgar Hoover, who resisted attempts to integrate. I would just hope they’d get beyond that, so this is disappointing."

The new statistics also show problems in getting and keeping women in the agency.

There were 2,631 women in the FBI in late 2014, just five agents fewer than in early 2012. However, due to a drop of about 300 in the size of the overall agent force, the proportion of women edged lower, to 19.15 percent from 19.55 percent, Politico reports.

Asian agents accounted for 4.33 percent of the force in 2014, up from 4.18 percent three years earlier. The number of agents and personnel described as "multi-racial" has gone up but still is less than 1 percent of the workforce.

Comey says he's been trying to hire more minorities, and also has been requiring all new agents and analysts to study how the Bureau treated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the website All Gov reports.

Former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover worked to destroy King’s credibility to help damage the civil rights movement, the website notes.
