Dr. Anthony Fauci said he is wearing a face mask in public because it is an effective way to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and because he is setting an example of what all people should be doing in public, he told CNN on Wednesday.
The country’s top infectious disease expert told CNN’s Jim Sciutto on "Newsroom” that he wears a face mask in public as a “symbol” of what Americans should be doing to help curb the spread of the virus.
“I wear it for the reason that I believe it is effective,” Fauci said. “It’s not 100 percent effective. I mean, it’s sort of respect for another person, and have that other person respect you. You wear a mask, they wear a mask, you protect each other.”
He said he wears a face covering to set an example “because I want to make it be a symbol for people to see that’s the kind of thing you should be doing.”
Fauci’s stance on face masks is completely opposite that of President Donald Trump, who will not wear a face mask at public events.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been advocating for the use of cloth masks when in public since last month.
