Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has left enough of a trail of clues to suggest he's preparing for a run at political office someday, Vanity Fair's Nick Bilton writes.

Start with the amended proxy filing in 2016, allowing Zuckerberg to leave Facebook voluntarily, but still retain control.

Throw in a trip across the U.S. to meet everyday Americans, and a recent commencement speech at Harvard where he was touting the importance of affordable childcare, Bilton writes.

Just last week, Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, hired Hillary Clinton pollster Joel Benenson to do some work for their charity, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, signaling, perhaps, a shift into politics and policy.

Whatever the mission, whatever the vision, Zuckerberg firmly believes he can use technology to not only fix what's broken in the country, but also use it as a way to bring people together on myriad issues, Bilton writes.

Be it mayor of Palo Alto, governor of California, or president of the U.S., Zuckerberg has his sights set on a "larger plan" that only he knows of for sure.

"I'm sure that the possibility of public office has crossed Zuckerberg's mind, but probably for a reason that none of us have thought of, and it may also be 19 steps down the line," Bilton writes. "I don't think he's going to be on the ballot for 2020, but I do think he has left the option open to run for office one day."
