New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is bring investigated for illegally soliciting campaign funds from Donald Trump's daughter, according to a report.

The New York Post reports the state's Joint Commission on Public Ethics (JCOPE) is looking into the matter. Subpoenas have reportedly been sent to Trump's daughter Ivanka and other executives at the family business, which is based in Manhattan.

The probe focuses on whether Schneiderman, who had been conducting a fraud investigation into Trump University, had asked for campaign donations from members of the Trump family in exchange for easing off his investigation.

The Trump family filed an ethics complaint against the attorney general more than a year ago about the matter, reports the Post.

"We think it's great news that JCOPE has taken our complaint seriously and appears to be conducting an investigation into very serious allegations and breach of public trust that we raised more than a year ago," Trump Organization Vice President George Sorial told the Post.

The complaint alleged that Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, were asked by Schneiderman to host a fundraiser for him and also to meet with him for dinner and drinks on two occasions. During each meeting, the Trumps claim Schneiderman brought up the investigation into Trump University.

To complicate matters, lawyer Avi Schick was representing the Trump Organization in response to the university investigation at the same time he was helping raise funds for Schneiderman's re-election campaign, reports the Post.

"During many of these targeted solicitations, Mr. Schneiderman, on his own initiative, brought up his office's inquiry into [Trump] ... [and] assured [Ivanka] and others that they should not be concerned since the investigation was 'going nowhere,'" the Trump complaint reads, according to the Post.

The newspaper reports that Schneiderman could face ethics violations or a fine if he's found to have broken the rules and taken advantage of his position.

Donald Trump, meanwhile, is considering a run for president next year. He thought about entering the 2012 race but decided not to.

He made news this week by saying he is "very, very strongly considering" a White House run, and that he is the only GOP candidate who could beat Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Also this week, Trump warned the United States is heading toward financial ruin.
