The mother of Eric Garner, whose death captured national attention after a New York City police officer put him in a chokehold, says police officers have to stop "coming into our neighborhoods and brutalizing, terrorizing, murdering."

Gwen Carr spoke to a crowd at a site in Manhattan protesting George Floyd's egregious death in Minnesota. She addressed the audience while wearing a mask that reads "I can't breathe."

"It just keeps happening over and over again," Carr said.

Garner was placed in a chokehold by NYPD in Staten Island in 2014 after he was confronted for selling loose cigarettes. Like Floyd, he was heard saying "I can't breathe" on a video before dying. Floyd died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Protests erupted around the country Monday, starting in Minneapolis, then New York and Los Angeles.

During an interview with CNN, Carr drew comparisons between the death of her son and Floyd.

"It's hard enough we're coming up on the anniversary of my son's death, and now to hear about this young man, it's like déjà vu," Carr said. "It's just like the murder of my son all over again. He was basically the same age as Eric."

"Look at that video, they outright murdered that young man," Carr said. "No matter what he did, he wasn't doing anything to threaten them, so why would they kill that young man? Just like they killed my son."
