Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Emma González, who came to national prominence for her emotional speech lambasting lawmakers and the National Riffle Association following the mass shooting at her school that killed 17 people, has surpassed the NRA and its top spokeswoman in Twitter followers in less than two weeks, The Hill reported on Monday.

González's Twitter account, which was only set up this month, now has more than 950,000 followers. This surpasses the NRA's official account, which has 585,000 followers and the group's spokeswoman Dana Loesch, who has 781,000.

González, as well as some of her classmates, has become leading voices for gun control. They have appeared on numerous television programs the past two weeks, as well as a CNN town hall debate, where González argued with Loesch over gun control.

She has harshly criticized President Donald Trump and other politicians for taking money from the NRA.

USA Today reported that the NRA and other gun-rights groups spent some $55 million in the last election cycle, which is almost 19 times the amount spent by organizations promoting gun control, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

González and her classmates are returning to school Monday for the first time since the shooting on February 14, and classes are scheduled to start on Wednesday, according to The Hill.

González told People that she and her classmates feel like they're running out of time.

"[I'm racing against] people forgetting, the momentum slowing down," she said. "I can only pray nothing happens right now that could distract the nation from paying attention to this. We were very close to being swept under the carpet and we did not let that happen."

She has been using her Twitter account to spread her message:
