Hillary Clinton wrote a letter of encouragement to an 8-year-old third grade girl from Maryland who lost her election for class president by a single vote to a boy, CBS News reported.

"As I know too well, it's not easy when you stand up and put yourself in contention for a role that's only been sought by boys," Clinton wrote to Martha Kennedy Morales.

But "the most important thing is that you fought for what you believed in," Clinton added. "And it is always worth it."

Clinton heard about the election loss when the girl's father, Albert Morales, posted about it on Facebook, and someone passed along his message to her.

The former secretary of state also gave Martha encouragement for the future, CNBC reported.

"As you continue to learn and grow in the years ahead," wrote Clinton, "know that I am cheering you on for a future of great success."

Martha ran for class president when her combined third- and fourth-grade class at Friends Community School held elections as part of a unit on U.S. government.

The third grader told CNN she would run for class president another time if the opportunity arose.

"To know that Hilary Clinton is cheering me on for future success, I mean, this is really special," she said.
