New York City Man Hospitalized With Ebola-Like Symptoms

A New York City man who recently traveled to West Africa has been hospitalized after showing Ebola-like symptoms.

Brooklyn resident Hamen Sibu, 56, returned from Mali over the weekend. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital on Thursday and is being tested and monitored for the deadly Ebola virus, reports the New York Daily News.

The report says Sibu went to a doctor on Wednesday with a fever, body aches and nausea, all symptoms of Ebola. He was sent home, although it was not clear whether he mentioned his trip to Africa.

Sibu called 9-1-1 Thursday morning when his condition got worse, according to the New York Post,  and said he had traveled from Mali. Paramedics following Ebola response protocols arrived at his home and took him to the hospital.

The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, which operates the city's public hospitals and health centers, confirmed in a statement there is a possible Ebola patient being monitored.

"An individual who came to the United States from Mali, a country with limited Ebola transmission, was taken to HHC Bellevue Hospital Center today," the statement reads. "Due to the individual's travel history and symptoms, the patient has been isolated, and an Ebola test will be performed. Results are expected later today."

The Daily News quotes one of Sibu's neighbors, who said the patient's son blamed a heart problem, not Ebola, on his symptoms.

"It's only because the guy's from Africa that they're making a big deal out of it," the neighbor told the paper.

On Tuesday, a woman being monitored for Ebola in New York City died at a hair salon. She had recently traveled from Guinea, located in West Africa, and was being subjected to a 21-day monitoring period for the virus. Officials on Wednesday announced she died of a heart attack, not Ebola.

Earlier this month, American Dr. Craig Spencer was declared Ebola-free after being treated for the disease in New York City. He contracted Ebola while working in West Africa.
