Dr. Birx: Best-Case Scenario Is 100,000-200,000 US Deaths

White House coronavirus response coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx predicted on Monday that there would be 100,000 to 200,000 American deaths from the pandemic as a best-case scenario.

Speaking on NBC News “Today” a day after the government's foremost infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said the U.S. will certainly have more than 100,000 deaths, Birx echoed that sentiment.

"I think everyone understands now that you can go from five to 50 to 500 to 5,000 cases very quickly," Birx said. “We’re very worried about every city in the United States and the potential for this virus to get out of control.”

When asked about a timeline for when the country can start to return to normal, Birx stressed that "I think in some of the metro areas we were late in getting people to follow the 15-day guidelines."

Birx said that the best care scenario would be for "100 percent of Americans doing precisely what is required, but we're not sure that all of America is responding in a uniform way to protect one another, so we also have to factor that in.”

She also emphasized that no part of the nation, even rural areas, is safe from the pandemic.

“This virus, we think, can spread with a lot of asymptomatic and mild cases and it’s not until it gets into the vulnerable groups that you start to see the hospitalizations,” Birx said. “So if you wait for that, if the metros and the rural areas don’t take care, by the time you see it, it has penetrated your community pretty significantly, and that’s what we’re concerned about and that’s why you have to prepare, even though you think it’s not there.”
