A frontline New York emergency room doctor who is an Iraq War veteran slammed New Yorkers who took to parks to sunbathe and, in his estimation, ignore social distancing rules.

Cleavon Gilman, who video blogs about treating patients in the pandemic, and has an active Twitter account, tweeted over the weekend:

"16,000 New Yorkers dead in 8 weeks! This is a SLAP in the face to healthcare providers nationwide risking their lives and dying on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic. I'm in Central Park right now, and it's business as usual."

Other tweets included:

"I won't lie..It was shock - or slap in the face! But I'm over it. We need to correct this behavior to prevent further spread of the virus. It's only going to get warmer outside."

In response to people who questioned him, Gilman tweeted:

"We are not asking New Yorkers to stay inside ALL day EVERY day; that would be unreasonable. However if you're outside please wear a mask and stay 6 feet apart (or even farther!), even if you are in groups!"

When some people noted Gilman was in the park as well, otherwise he could not have shot the video that accompanied his tweet, he responded:

"I'm also an ER doctor in NYC treating 100s of patients with COVID. My colleagues have died from this virus. Many of my patients have died from this virus. I have to see what's happening in the community to prevent further spread of the virus, otherwise this is all for nothing."

The Daily Mail noted, while sunbathers took in the rays Sunday, 280 more people died in the state.

As of Monday afternoon, New York City had 13,536 confirmed COVID-19 deaths and 5,373 probable deaths, according to NYC Health.
