DNC Displacing Low-Income Families From Motels

The Democratic National Convention is forcing groups to come to the financial rescue of families being displaced at motels by convention-goers who can afford the rising rates, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Agencies in Charlotte are coming together to provide financial aid and beds at shelters for families in motels forced out by the higher rates due to the DNC, which starts next week. A bank and a religious school are among the contributors to a $20,000 fund to help the low-income families, the Observer reported.

It’s part of a plan unveiled Monday in anticipation of as many as 100 families being displaced. The money will be used to keep families in their current motels, by either negotiating lower rents or supplementing the money paid by the families, the Observer reported.

Annabelle Suddreth, executive director of A Child’s Place, told the Observer that the goal is to avoid disrupting the lives of children.

“Ninety percent of these families don’t have their own transportation, so the impact is that the children miss school,” she told the paper.
