Dick Morris to Newsmax TV: New COVID Totals Not 'Big Factor' in Election

Even with the numbers of COVID-19 cases climbing to record-high numbers in states like Texas and Florida, that should not be a "big factor" in President Donald Trump's chances against former Vice President Joe Biden in November's election, political strategist and Newsmax analyst Dick Morris told Newsmax TV.

"In terms of the politics of the situation, I don't think COVID is going to be a big factor in the election," Morris told Monday's "Spicer & Co." "I think that Biden has already made his case that Trump acted too late, and I think they basically dealt with that. I don't think it is going to be a particularly important gauge in the election."

Also, a great deal depends on what the death rate will be with the recent outbreaks, Morris said.

"You look at the charts right now, Florida's soaring in new cases, but is absolutely slack in terms of deaths," Morris told host Sean Spicer.

The death rates might be low, he added, because the majority of cases are in younger people who are "not particularly vulnerable" to the virus, Morris said.

"Of course they can spread it to people who are vulnerable, but that takes a while and by then hopefully we'll have a vaccine," he added.

Morris also discussed an Axios report about how the campaign is trying to rebrand Biden, because they fear "Sleepy Joe" nickname will not spark the reaction the 2016 campaign got by calling its then-rival "Crooked Hillary" Clinton.

A better approach, Morris said, would be to focus on the "looming danger" of what would happen if Biden becomes president and has to face the "mobs" led by people like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and other "crazies" who want to take over power in the United States: Biden would be "too weak to stop them."

"They want to topple monuments, they want to topple our heritage, (George) Washington, (Abraham) Lincoln, and Ulysses S. Grant," Morris added. "I think if people saw the barbarians at the gate, as it were, and Joe Biden is standing there between them and the barbarians . . . the important point is to reflect that he is no bulwark against these crazies."
