The Department of Homeland Security is working to better enforce the nation's immigration laws through a variety of ideas that include limiting polygraph and physical fitness tests for some new hires, according to a new report.

The Washington Post reported the Department of Homeland Security has identified 33,000 more beds for illegal immigrants, has begun talking with local authorities about cooperation, and is looking at how to expeditiously hire 5,000 more Customs and Border Patrol officers — the latter which includes potentially scrapping polygraph, language, and physical fitness tests for some applicants.

The suggestions were in a progress report that follows up on Trump's executive order signed in January, which directed the construction of a border wall between the United States and Mexico.

Officials told the Post the progress report contains suggestions and ideas that have not yet been analyzed by senior DHS officials.

Acting DHS spokesperson Gillian Christensen told the Post the agency will not comment on "pre-decisional documents."

The Trump administration said it is not seeking to deport massive amounts of people who are living in the U.S. illegally. Trump himself, however, has said illegal immigration constitutes a national security crisis that needs to be dealt with.

The conclusion of the DHS report obtained by the Post reads: "As the president noted, border security is critically important to the national security of the United States. Over the coming months, DHS will continue to work in close consultation with interagency partners to ensure the proper and timely enforcement of Executive Order 13767."
