Fla. Gov. Ron DeSantis: Heed Dorian Evacuation Orders

By    |   Monday, 02 September 2019 11:28 AM

Hurricane Dorian, while stalled over the Bahamas, remains a very dangerous storm and people who have been ordered to evacuate Florida's communities should heed those calls and leave, Gov. Ron DeSantis said Monday.

"Those decisions are not issued lightly by local folks," DeSantis told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."

"It is based on the fact there is a significant risk to people, particularly in those coastal areas."

The storm slammed into the Bahamas as a "category 5 plus, with 185 mile-an-hour winds sustained," said DeSantis. He pointed out that there has only been one storm with winds like that to hit Florida, and that was on Labor Day in 1935.

"This is a major storm," said DeSantis. "What we're watching now is the track on this thing. It has slowed down ... it is kind of turning over in the Bahamas."

Forecasters are saying the storm will move up the Florida coast, but DeSantis said if it "wobbles just a little bit further west," there will be potential landfall in Florida.

"But even if it hugs the coast, it is powerful enough that you will see major storm surge, wind damage, and flooding," said DeSantis. "People should heed the call, take steps necessary to protect themselves and their families. I hope it wobbles further north, going on the east side of the cone, but that is not something [we] can assume. You need to prepare for a major impact."

Meanwhile, DeSantis said he's suspended all tolls on evacuation routes to allow people to more easily leave, and there is still the ability to open shoulder lanes if necessary.

"We have less Labor Day traffic than we otherwise would here in the state of Florida," said the governor. "We're willing to take whatever actions we need to."
