Rep. Jim Jordan: Pelosi, Dems Focused on Stopping Trump

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, on Wednesday balked at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's suggestion President Donald Trump delay his State of the Union address until the partial government shutdown ends.

"This just underscores what they're saying," Rep. Jordan said during an appearance on Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

"Until they start focusing on the country and not just on stopping the president, I don't know how you can reach an agreement with these folks. Hopefully that's going to change."

Pelosi in a letter to Trump said he should not deliver his annual address to a Joint Session of Congress on Jan. 29.

"Sadly, given the security concerns and unless the government reopens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has reopened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to Congress on Jan. 29," Pelosi wrote.

Jordan said he was hopeful the shutdown would not drag on following a meeting between Trump and at least seven House Democrats Wednesday aimed at reopening the government.

"I think we're starting to see signs – a number of House Democrats who won in these tight races in formally Republican-held districts – they're starting to say, 'Oh, we do need to get something done.' . . . I think we're starting to see that happen and that's the only thing that's going to change it," he said.

Trump is demanding $5.7 billion in funding for a border wall, but Democrats will not agree.
