A Delta chief pilot told air captains it wasn’t their job to tell others they were infected with coronavirus, according to a nine-minute video of an internal discussion among union leaders at Air Line Pilots Association, the largest U.S. pilots’ union. The discussion was recorded in secret and posted to YouTube, reports Huffington Post.

The representative appeared to be Brandon Conwill, a committee chairman at Delta’s chapter of ALPA.

“The chief pilot told this individual that it was a CDC thing that it’s not your job to go telling people you were infected,” Conwill says. “That’s one reason the company was telling people, ‘Hey, don’t tell the flight attendants you were sick or anything else of that nature.’ If there really is guidance that you’re supposed to tell people that obviously needs to be communicated pretty clearly because apparently that’s getting lost in translation."

Delta in a letter to HuffPost said it was aware of the video “and the discussion contained within it and are monitoring – our initial read is this is not consistent with our [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention]-informed notification process.”

The report comes less than three days after ALPA, in a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration, said some carriers haven’t been following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance that they let their employees know when they have been exposed to COVID-19.

“Friday’s reports of the death from COVID-19 of an American Airlines flight attendant is especially sobering, and highlights the exigency of taking all needed measures to avoid further contagion of airline crew members,” Joe DePete, president of ALPA, wrote in the letter, which was dated Tuesday.
