Monday, 10 January 2011 07:32 AM EST

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay took part in his share of political battles during his time in Congress. Now he faces his toughest fight: staying out of prison.

The former Houston-area congressman — nicknamed "the Hammer" — will be back in an Austin courtroom Monday for the sentencing phase of his trial.

DeLay was convicted Nov. 24 on charges of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering in a scheme to illegally funnel corporate money to Texas candidates in 2002.

He faces up to life in prison. His attorneys are asking for probation.

The sentencing hearing is expected to last about two days. DeLay's trial took nearly a month.

DeLay has chosen Senior Judge Pat Priest to sentence him.
