Many congressional lawmakers praised Defense Secretary James Mattis for his service to the nation and the U.S. armed forces following news of his resignation Thursday.

"[Mattis] should be proud of the service he has rendered to" Trump "and our nation," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., tweeted after President Donald Trump announced Mattis would resign in February.

"General Mattis is a combination of intellect and integrity," added Graham. "He has been in the fight against radical Islam for decades and provided sound and ethical military advice to President Trump. He is a role model for the concept of Duty, Honor, Country."

"Secretary Mattis served his country with honor," said Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala. "His resignation is a loss to our country's leadership; his counsel to @POTUS, cool head, and steady hand will be sorely missed."

Mattis, a retired four-star general in his resignation letter cited major differences with Trump over America's role in the world, and said the president had the right "to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours."

Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., called Mattis' lifetime of service "an inspiration to all," while Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., called it an honor to work with Mattis "on some of the most pressing national security challenges facing America."

Sen.-elect Mitt Romney, R-Utah, and Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, spoke out against the move.

"The foreign policy described by Gen. Mattis today has, for nearly 3/4 century, kept us from global war, empowered our economy, helped billions escape from poverty & opened freedom's door around the world," tweeted Romney, a Republican. "His service, vision & character were a blessing. He will be greatly missed."

Added Hurd, also a Republican: "I slept better at night knowing that General Mattis was protecting our nation, our allies, and our brave men and women in uniform – many of whom I've worked with in the trenches. This is bad news for the nation and the security of the world."
