NYC Mayor de Blasio: 'Something Like Normal' Hoped by September

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said he is hopeful that the city is "back to something like normal" by September, but that will take a "smart, cautious approach.'"

"If by September schools are open again and more and more people going back to work, even if we still have to keep a lot of social distancing in place or other measures, then I could see us sustaining," the mayor told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "We want to think about getting it right the first time, and then from Fall on, actually resuming more and more into being a normal country."

However, he warned that jumping back in "too soon," in May or June is the "wrong way," and could create a boomerang effect that will bring the disease back and delaying "well into the year anything like normalcy."

New York City on Tuesday added 3,700 probable coronavirus deaths to its count, pushing totals past 10,000. The extra deaths were people who had been in contact with COVID-19 but never had a test before they died, de Blasio confirmed.

"We've got to say the whole truth as we know it," said de Blasio. "It's important to be honest about this. I mean, look, these families have been through hell. And the first thing to think about is the human reality of thousands more human beings we lost and families that are in pain."

New York City also has addressed shortages its healthcare workers have been experiencing for equipment and tests through its own resources, the mayor said.

"We have been waiting for testing from the federal government," he said. "We have been trying to get (it through the) international market. We can't get it. Face shields, surgical gowns that protected our healthcare workers, our heroic healthcare workers, they have been running out all the time. We just said let's make our own."

By the end of May, the city hopes the efforts will result in 50,000 tests kits a week, said De Blasio.
