New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is comparing himself to Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Mahatma Gandhi.

The comparison came during an interview on Politico's "Off Message" podcast.

De Blasio was asked about why his Progressive Agenda Committee fizzled.

"I want to talk to anyone who thinks that and tell them they need to start thinking more," he said. "I mean, give me a break. So, every time someone tries something and it doesn't work, it invalidates anything else they might do going forward?

"Tell Thomas Edison that, and Henry Ford, tell Mahatma Gandhi. How many people fell on their faces along the way trying things, experimenting with things, had setbacks? There's no leader who hasn't had setbacks. You immediately find that you learn from each one."

But de Blasio conceded he is just a "speck of the universe" when compared to those three.

"Those are major historical figures," he said.

In the end, his Progressive Agenda Committee was overtaken by the Bernie Sanders' campaign, de Blasio noted.

"The movement building is about a whole lot of people trying to get to the same place," he said. "And it doesn't happen in one jump."

"The idea of the Progressive Agenda was to crystallize a core economic platform that progressives could unite around . . .

"Within months, Bernie became the voice for so many of those ideas so effectively. And I'm thrilled with that."
