'Columbine' Author on Assault Weapons: 'Nobody Uses Them for Hunting'

Assault weapons such as the one used in the Florida school shooting are not used for hunting, Dave Cullen, author of "Columbine," a book about the 1999 school shooting in Columbine, Colorado, said Thursday.

"I was in the infantry, and seeing that rifle, it looks just like the M-16 we used. An M-16 is to kill people. We were trained to kill people with it. They are assault weapons. Nobody uses them for hunting," Cullen told CNN's "New Day."

On Wednesday, a 19-year-old used an AR-15 rifle in the mass shootings in Parkland, Florida. He was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder.

"They are military weapons. They should be used by the military," Cullen continued. "They should be limited to the military and law enforcement. That seems like a no-brainer."

Cullen compared the situation to Russia, where there have recently been a number of stabbing attacks in schools.

"The country is kind of in a panic about it, because they're pretty horrific. The last two, there were 12 to 15 people seriously injured in each one. And I think there have been five of them over the last couple of months. Total fatalities: Zero. Nobody dies," Cullen told CNN.

"It's almost impossible to get a weapon there. So this is not a theoretical discussion. We have had this in some other countries, too. But we have a situation where the same thing is going on, but they don't have access to guns and nobody dies," Cullen said.
