New York Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand called on New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to resign on Friday, saying he had lost the confidence of the public amid numerous accusations of sexual harassment — and worse — by former aides and others.

''Confronting and overcoming the COVID crisis requires sure and steady leadership,'' the statement says. ''We commend the brave actions of the individuals who have come forward with serious allegations of abuse and misconduct.

''Due to the multiple, credible sexual harassment and misconduct allegations, it is clear that Governor Cuomo has lost the confidence of his governing partners and the people of New York. Governor Cuomo should resign.''

The call by Schumer and Gillibrand comes following another allegation in which Cuomo is accused of groping an unidentified aide after calling her to the governor’s mansion last year to help with a cell phone issue. The claim is being investigated by Albany police, it was reported Thursday.

Cuomo, 63, has been under fire for weeks as more women — mostly former aides — have gone public with allegations of sexual harassment or other inappropriate behavior. Cuomo has largely denied the charges leveled against him; however, he acknowledged during an apologetic press conference last week that some of the interactions may not have been perceived as he’d intended them.

The furor over the sexual harassment allegations has obscured the other scandal that for almost a year has threatened Cuomo’s gubernatorial grip — his office’s order that forced New York nursing homes to take patients who were positive for the COVID-19 virus. Critics have said and news investigations have shown that the governor’s office significantly downplayed and sought to keep quiet the thousands of deaths that resulted after the order. Those allegations have dogged Cuomo even before the sexual harassment scandal enveloped his administration.

On Friday morning, high-profile New York Reps. Jerry Nadler, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal Bowman all called for Cuomo to go.

Soon thereafter the ''entire Democratic state senate delegation agreed Gov. Cuomo should resign,'' NBC New York reported. State legislators were also planning an impeachment investigation.
