Interior northern states from Montana to Wisconsin are seeing the highest average number of daily new infections per capita of the novel coronavirus in the United States, with North Dakota leading the way, according to statistics from the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

States on both coasts are showing the lowest number of per capita infections over the past seven days, including Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Oregon and Washington, the task force’s website shows.

In total number of cases, however, Texas (40,810), Illinois (33,236) and California (30,121), three of the five most populous states in the nation, still rank as the top three.

North Dakota had an average of 107.9 daily new infections per 100,000 over the past seven days, slightly ahead of neighbor South Dakota with 101.6. Wisconsin was a distant third with 72.7.

Montana (70.6), Wyoming (56.4) and Idaho (51) were next in line.

Across the United States, there were 21.8 average daily new infections over the past seven days.

The seven-day average number of new daily infections has surpassed the previous high of 69,325 on July 21, reaching 72,734 on Tuesday, but deaths have been relatively unchanged, averaging between 882 and 704 since Sept. 7, according to worldometers.info, significantly lower than the high of 2,256 reached on April 21.

A trough in the jet stream has brought record cold and snow across the upper portion of the country in the past week, a factor the author of one of the state reports cited as at least a contributing factor.

"Friends and families are moving social gatherings indoors, significantly increasing spread," the report said according to CNN.

"We continue to see unrelenting, broad community spread in the Midwest, Upper Midwest and West. This will require aggressive mitigation to control both the silent, asymptomatic spread and symptomatic spread.”
