The United States is reportedly "actively looking" at expanding mandatory COVID-19 testing to travelers on domestic flights.

Reuters reported that Dr. Marty Cetron, director for the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Tuesday "conversations … are ongoing and looking at what the types and locations of testing might be."

"We’re actively looking at it," Cetron added about testing of domestic flight passengers.

The comments came the same day the Biden administration implemented a policy requiring international travelers to test negative for COVID-19 before arriving in the United States, The Hill reported. There are no current nationwide restrictions on domestic travel, with the CDC advising nonessential travel be avoided.

Some localities, including Washington, D.C., require travelers to test negative before arriving as well, The Hill noted.

"We realize that there's been a dramatic evolution and increase in both testing platforms and testing capacity. I think this is a really important part of our toolkit to combat this pandemic," Cetron said, Reuters reported.

The United States has the most cases of COVID-19 of any other country, with more than 26 million reported across the nation as well as 425,000 related deaths.
