Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker is dialing back his state's reopening and putting in place new restrictions on large public gatherings to curb coronavirus flair ups.

“While we've seen a decrease in #COVID19MA cases + hospitalizations since May, there's been a slight uptick in certain communities in recent days,” Baker tweeted on Friday.

The Republican Baker held off on moving ahead with the second part of Phase 3 reopening and launched a multiagency alliance with police officials to reduce public health violations.

“Now, we are seeing the virus escalate in certain communities around the commonwealth, and we have to put together a plan, working together, to stop it,” Baker said during a Friday news conference. “This fight against COVID-19 is far from over.”

Baker will also reduce the limit on outdoor crowds from 100 to 50 people beginning Tuesday. Indoor gatherings limits will stay at 25 people. Face coverings will be mandated at all gatherings of more than 10 people.

The governor reinstated the new order based on various reports of large gatherings violating restrictions, social distancing guidelines and mask mandates throughout Massachusetts.
