Republican Sen. Bob Corker has apologized for using the offensive word "midget" during a Senate hearing.
"I sincerely apologize for what was a poor word choice and in no way meant to offend anyone," he said on Thursday,
Politico reported.
Little People of America had slammed the GOP Tennessee senator for using midget in a derogatory way before a Senate Banking Committee vote on Tuesday.
The nonprofit group, which champions the rights of the dwarfism community, said the word was a "slur" and called it "embarrassing and insulting."
"Today, no matter in what context it is used, the word dehumanizes and objectifies people of short stature," the organization’s president, Gary Arnold, said, according to Politico.
Corker had used the used the word when he ripped into colleagues on Tuesday for allowing Congressional Budget Office figures to influence debates.
"I’m sorry it just feels like a bunch of midgets up here worrying about some CBO issue," he said.
