Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper declared a disaster emergency on Christmas Eve due to a propane shortage that could impact 33,000 residents, The Denver Post reports.

The residents live in predominantly rural areas.

Hickenlooper’s executive order is a proactive move to warn people as the state is expecting supply problems following operation interruptions at a propane facility last week due to power problems and an anticipation of “extreme winter weather” over the coming month.

It lifts regulations that allow for easier access to propane, including suspending the hours of service regulations until midnight on Jan. 8.

The shortage has “caused the propane industry to seek supplies outside of the state, significantly increasing the amount of time needed to transport propane used for winter heating fuel,” the Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Management said in a statement.
