Officials in a Maryland city just a few miles outside of Washington, D.C., are mulling a plan that would allow noncitizens to vote in local elections, The Baltimore Sun reported.

If approved, College Park, home to the University of Maryland, would become the largest city in the state to adopt measures allowing undocumented immigrants to vote for mayor and city council, the Sun reported.

They would not be allowed to vote in congressional or presidential elections.

Though common in the state of Maryland — 10 municipalities already allow noncitizens to vote — the timing of College Park's consideration of the measure is drawing much attention given the hot-button issue that illegal immigration has become the past year, the Sun reported.

Especially given that the College Park measure would not distinguish between legal permanent residents and illegals.

"We very intentionally made it so that we did not have questions about citizenship status,” Patrick Paschall, a former member of the Hyattsville, MD, council who championed the legislation there, told the Sun. "It undermines the premise of noncitizen voting to try to draw a distinction."

The College Park city council is poised to vote on the measure Tuesday, the Sun reported.
