NY Lawmakers Call for 9/11 Coin Crackdown

Monday, 24 January 2011 09:24 PM EST

NEW YORK (AP) — Two New York lawmakers are asking for a crackdown on a company that is selling Sept. 11 commemorative coins supposedly containing silver from ground zero.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler called Monday for the Federal Trade Commission to stop Port Chester, N.Y.-based National Collector's Mint from selling the coins. They said the coins are not sanctioned by any government agency and have no connection to the Sept. 11 memorial being built at the World Trade Center site.

National Collector's Mint President Avram Freedberg said in a statement that the coins are clad in silver recovered from vaults beneath ground zero. The company is selling the coins for $29.95.
