In an announcement President Donald Trump probably wishes was fake news, CNN said Tuesday it has promoted reporter Jim Acosta to be its Chief White House Correspondent.

Acosta, who previously served as the network's Senior White House Correspondent, has been a thorn in the side of the Trump administration for his aggressive questioning at White House press briefings and news conferences.

He's had tense back-and-forth exchanges with press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and her predecessor Sean Spicer.

Last August, when Trump accused him of spreading fake news, Acosta shot back, "Mr. President, haven't you spread a lot of fake news yourself, sir?"

And shortly before his inauguration in January 2017, Trump labeled Acosta "rude" and ripped into CNN as a "terrible" company when the newsman repeatedly tried to ask the commander in chief a question.

"You're attacking us, can you give us a question?" Acosta replied.

"Don't be rude. No, I'm not going to give you a question. You are fake news," Trump said.

Acosta has covered the Obama and Trump White Houses for CNN since 2013.

His promotion was announced along with several others at the cable news network.
