An activist group caused a stir Thursday morning in Richmond, Virginia, after it hung eight clown effigies dressed as members of the Ku Klux Klan from a tree in a city park.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported on the discovery that was later tied to an art collective named INDECLINE.

The group claimed the stunt was a "protest of the White Nationalist uprising in the United States."

A sign around the neck of one of the clowns read, "If attacked by a mob of clowns, go for the juggler — INDECLINE."

The group made headlines last August when it placed statues of a naked Donald Trump in various cities across the country.

Thursday's protest was met with condemnation from all sides.

"When you look at something like that, whether you consider it art or not art, lynching is not something that we're in agreement with at all," the NAACP's Richmond branch president James "J.J." Minor told the Dispatch. "We do not support any groups that support violence."

Said Councilman Michael Jones, "No matter what you think the end result is, hate is not a proper response. Hate simply begets hate."

Several racially charged incidents have occurred across the United States this year, including one in Charlottesville, Virginia, last month that resulted in the death of a 32-year-old woman.
