Critics of People's Climate March protesters in Manhattan were livid over the trash they nonchalantly left behind — posting photos on social media to illustrate the massive garbage pileup.
A similar shot was retweeted by David Kreutzer, a research fellow at the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation:
Kreutzer told the
New York Post that the marchers were hypocrites for wasting paper and burning fossil fuel in getting to the
event, which drew more than 310,000 participants Sunday.
"The hypocrisy varies from person to person," the economist told the Post. "The ones that fly in on private jets are the most hypocritical," he added, taking a not-so-subtle slap at celebrity marchers Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo.
Breitbart News reports that former Vice President Al Gore, who marched on Sunday, left the event in a Chevrolet Suburban SUV.
Also marching at the event were U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, scientist Jane Goodall, Democratic Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Chuck Schumer of New York, and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
The protest comes in advance of a United Nations climate change summit, which is expected to attract more than 120 world leaders, including President Barack Obama,
Politico reports.
Cab drivers also weren't thrilled by the crowds, with one hack, Gamal Abovelwafa, griping about traffic to the Post: "It's a mess."
Pointing out the snarl around Central Park at the march's terminus, he asked, "Where are we going to go?"
Kreutzer told the Post that climate change is unlikely the biggest problem the planet faces this century.
"It is phenomenally arrogant to think that 14 years into this century that we already know the greatest crisis we will face," he charged.
