Lawyer Cleta Mitchell: Website Posting Reward for IRS Info

By    |   Tuesday, 24 June 2014 02:30 PM EDT

A lawyer representing several conservative groups allegedly targeted by the IRS says one of her clients is offering a "bounty'' for any information about the agency's wrongdoings,
Cleta Mitchell told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

The client has created IRSbounty.com, which describes itself as "a $1 million, crowd-funded award for new, relevant evidence implicating IRS senior leadership or Obama White House officials in the IRS scandal.''

That includes any information about the alleged destruction of key emails written by former IRS official Lois Lerner and six other agency workers.

"They're raising money to pay a reward to anyone who can demonstrate any evidence either leading to the retrieval of these emails or information about the potential intentional destruction of the Lois Lerner emails,'' said Mitchell, a partner at Foley & Lardner LLP.

IRSBounty.com has established a toll-free phone number for people to provide information on IRS targeting, at 844-4Bounty.

Mitchell is also calling for the impeachment of embattled IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, who was accused Monday by House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa of having "a problem with credibility."

"He should be impeached. Congress has the right to impeach any federal officer under the Constitution, and we ought to impeach him,'' Mitchell said.

"This is unacceptable, and we have to show at some point that it's unacceptable, but in order to convict and impeach an officer, you have to have control of the United States Senate, and we don’t have that so, we have to win in November.''

Koskinen has had a rough and combative week before Congress, sparring with Republicans and insisting there was no way to recover the missing emails said to be lost in a computer crash.

"He doesn’t have the slightest concern for the people who pay the bills … the taxpayers,'' Mitchell said.

"He feels absolutely no obligation to the people. His only obligation is to the bureaucrat and the bureaucracy and the agency he works for.''

Mitchell said she had spoken with a lawyer from the Justice Department on Tuesday morning and requested the agency allow an independent forensic team to examine the agency's computer files.

"They refused, so we're going to file a motion in federal court. We have to hope that the federal judge will understand that this is really important,'' she said.
