President Donald Trump told reporters Tuesday he and Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., had a "very good conversation" about moving forward on background checks in response to the growing number of mass shootings taking place.

Trump, commenting while he was on his way to a speech in western Pennsylvania, added "we'll see what happens" as a result of conversations with Murphy, an outspoken advocate for gun control laws after the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School killings, reports The Hill

Murphy tweeted he spoke with Trump, as well as Sens. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., about background check laws, and noted they are still working to "find common ground."

"As I told the president, we can't get a bill if he and the GOP give the gun lobby veto power," Murphy also tweeted.

Trump is insisting he supports stronger background checks after shooters in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio killed more than 30 people and said Tuesday he thinks Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., wants to take action.

"There is nobody more pro-Second Amendment than Donald Trump, but I don't want guns in the hands of a lunatic or a maniac," the president said. "I think if we do proper background checks, we can prevent that."
