Congressional Chaplains Call on God to Intervene in Governing Crisis

As the showdowns intensify in Congress over Obamacare and a stopgap spending bill, the chaplains in the House and Senate called on the Lord Thursday to help restore compromise and reconciliation to negotiations aimed at averting a government shutdown, which is looking increasingly likely.

"Lord, deliver us from governing by crisis, empowering us to be responsible stewards of your bounty, using judicious compromise for the mutual progress of all," Senate Chaplain Barry Black prayed as he opened the Senate session on Friday.

Black, a former Navy rear admiral, also called on God to keep congressional lawmakers from "shackling" themselves "with the chains of dysfunction."

"Use our senators today to serve your purposes for this generation, making them ever-mindful of their accountability to you," he added.

His sentiments came at the end of a contentious week that saw a 21-hour mock filibuster of a stopgap spending measure by Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and bitter partisan clashes over defunding Obamacare.

Meanwhile, House Chaplain Patrick Conroy, a Jesuit priest, opened that chamber's session Thursday by praying for lawmakers to "show respect for those with whom they disagree," The Washington Times reported.

"May their actions in these coming days prove to be of heroic importance and benefit to our nation and its people."
