After Saturday’s tragic Arizona shooting, several congressmen are stepping up their security. For example, Reps. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah (pictured), and Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C., say they will carry guns in their home districts for protection,
Politico reports.
Both of them hold a “conceal and carry” permit, but won’t carry their weapons in Washington, D.C., they say.
You never think something like this will happen, but then it does,” Shuler says “After the elections, I let my guard down. Now I know I need to have [my gun] on me. We’re going to need to do a much better job with security at these events.”
Chaffetz says he’ll investigate whether U.S. Marshalls — who usually guard federal judges — can also protect congressmen at district events. “Perhaps they could better assess threats in the home district. It certainly ought to be on the table,” he says.
