Ben Carson has been immortalized at a Florida elementary school with the opening of a $15,000 reading room bearing his name.

The goal of the new "Ben Carson Reading Room" at Coral Sunset Elementary in Boca Raton is to help students improve their reading skills.

The project was spearheaded by the Carson Scholars Fund, founded in 1994 by the retired pediatric neurosurgeon, who waged a spirited bid for the GOP presidential nomination before dropping out in early March.

Funding for the reading room came from retired Boca Raton physician Donald Janower and his wife Barbara, who have had a long friendship with Carson and his wife Candy.

Janower treated Carson's mother Sonya, whom he called "loving and inspirational," as young Ben was growing up in Detroit, the Sun-Sentinel newspaper reports.

"Magical things happen when you open a book," Carson said of his love for literature in a video shown to students at the school of 650 pupils.

Candy Carson, who recently visited the new room which features a portrait of her husband on the wall and is equipped with bean bag seats, puppets and stuffed animals, told the students, "I love seeing you excited about learning."

During her visit, she and Barbara Janower treated a group of youngsters to readings from "Mr. Tiger Goes Wild" by Peter Brown and "The Grouchy Ladybug," by Eric Carle.

The Coral Sunset room is one of 150 in that have been built in 19 states since 2000 when the Carson Scholars Fund launched the project.
