A Brooklyn high school is passing out condoms at its prom in an effort to curb teen pregnancies and exposure to sexually transmitted diseases, its principal told the New York Daily News.
Hundreds of condoms being provided by NV Healthcare will be available for promgoers at Bedford-Stuyvesant Preparatory High School. Condoms are available at the school but this is the first time they will be made available at the prom.
“This is necessary,” said the school’s principal, Darryl Rascoe. “It’s practical and it’s the right thing to do.” He added that there are several kids at the 130-student school who already have children. Ahead of the prom, the school will host a safe-sex assembly,
“We’re fooling ourselves if we think we can leave this up to teams to be proactive,” Rascoe told the Daily News.
New York City has distributed millions of condoms since 2008, when its Health Department unveiled a brand new look for the NYC Condom and launched a cutting-edge media campaign to encourage New Yorkers to “get some.”
