Mexico is ramping up its efforts to stop illegal movement across the border with the United States, launching a new initiative to increase cooperation between the two countries, The Daily Caller reports.

The U.S.-Mexico Anti-Transnational Criminal Organization and Border Violence Prevention Initiative began Tuesday, and aims to boost cooperation between the U.S. and Mexico in order to decrease illegal border crossings. President Donald Trump announced last week he will impose tariffs on Mexican-made products if the country did not do more to stop illegal immigration.

"We can't allow migrants to cross our territory illegally," said Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Thursday, according to The Wall Street Journal. "We have to apply the laws without violating human rights, and at the same time calling for action to address the causes of migration."

U.S. officials said they have already begun training with their Mexican counterparts on policing the border.

"They conduct river sweeps with us along the river, checking stash houses, setting up checkpoints, all that," said Agent Javier Rodriguez, U.S. Border Patrol assistant chief for Foreign Operations Branch, RGV Sector. "Field training, tactical tracking, room entry, close border combat, going into rooms, police tactics."

Officials from the U.S. and Mexico are currently engaged in talks over border security and the threat of tariffs, which have continued into their second day.
