A member of the Border Patrol was attacked Thursday night along the U.S.-Mexico border, and he responded by shooting his attacker — an illegal border crosser — dead.

According to Breitbart, three men crossed into Arizona from Mexico. The Border Patrol detected the crossing and one agent responded. One of suspects got physical with the agent and was able to get ahold of his baton and radio — which he used to assault the agent.

The suspect also tried to grab the agent's gun. The agent responded by shooting the man, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The incident occurred near Somerton, Arizona at 10 p.m. local time Thursday.

"During the arrest, the subject grabbed the agent's radio and collapsible steel baton and began striking him in the face and head while he also attempted to remove the Agent's sidearm from its holster," a media release from U.S. Customs and Border Protections reads. "The agent, fearing for his life, discharged his weapon, which struck the suspect."

The agent according to USCBP, was left with bruises and lacerations on his head, face, and torso. He needed stitches on one wound and was diagnosed with a concussion.

Breitbart reports that the other two border crossers have been arrested.
